But while she admits to being shocked at being made redundant, Tynan notes on reflection it was a blessing in disguise. So when I was laid off the next week, it felt like the timing was right. Something had to give. We three really needed that. Likewise, loneliness is a new reality that must be worked through rather than avoided. As she points out, widows and single mothers by choice face a different loneliness: the burden of being the only grown-up in the family.

As the years have passed, she regularly reflects on that wisdom. I was trying to cook dinner and I had school uniforms to iron and a work deadline. I felt really proud of myself. She is currently working on her fifth book, a celebration of single parenthood.
