Where to find turtles in kauai




















So no matter where you are, if you are patient, you are likely to see one. One of these places is just past Lawai Beach on the way to Spouting Horn. Pass the beach and the resort and park along the side of the road. You will see a large rock wall on the ocean side of the road that separates the beachfront homes. This is another great turtle viewing location.

You may also encounter sea turtles while swimming or snorkeling. One note of caution however is that millions of years of evolution have made sea turtles remarkably adapted for life in the ocean. As a resulted, turtles can safely feed in rough surf. However, these areas are extremely dangerous for snorkeling and swimming. Snorkel in areas that are safe and you may still get lucky enough to encounter a turtle. Wow, that is amazing Rick. I have never seen that many on the beach. How great for you.

Mahalo for sharing. Beautiful creature. While snorkeling off Poipu, we saw about a half dozen Green Honu curiously checking us out and swimming underneath us. They were apparently juveniles and in a playful spirit. Also, we saw a few Honu swimming and feeding in the tumultuous waters off of Queens Bath on the north shore.

Koloa Landing — Straight out in front of Koloa Landing Resort is one of the best places to snorkel with sea turtles in Kauai. Guests can even grab snorkel gear from the resort or get hooked up with a local guide. Mahaulepu — This remote, more sparsely populated beach at the end of the Heritage hike offers twinkling blue waters ideal for snorkeling with sea turtles.

Spouting Horn — Kauai turtles are often seen congregating just below the lookout to the right of the horn in a little cove filled with rocks and delicious sea grasses. Anini — Sea turtles often swim close to shore, sometimes popping up their heads to check out the scene right there in the shallows.

The water is protected by the reef making it swimmable even in winter. Honu love to eat and lounge in the sand here. Given its name Turtle Cove , this was once considered the best place to see turtles in Kauai. Snorkelers enjoy a vast stretch of ocean perfect for seeking sea turtles. Tunnels — One of the best snorkeling spots in the Hawaiian Islands, this is a prime spot to make friends with countless fish and the occasional sea turtle.

Sea turtles made the Hawaiian islands their home long before people did, but in modern times their count has dropped dramatically. Honu were officially placed on the endangered species list in and are voraciously protected. Also, be sure to follow the golden rule while out in nature: do no harm.

Be sure to clean up after yourself and leave the area in a better condition than when you left. If everyone respects the wildlife and their surroundings, Turtle Cove can be a landmark for generations to come!
